In Gqeberha, a community-led initiative is showing the power of local action in solving environmental challenges and building climate resilience. This clean-up programme, led by volunteers and supported by local organisations, is transforming neglected spaces and inspiring pride and care.
What is the problem?
Many areas in Gqeberha suffer from pollution, illegal dumping and neglected public spaces. These issues harm the area's natural beauty and pose risks to public health. A lack of awareness about climate change and sustainable practices makes the problem worse.
How did they fix it?
A group of volunteers, supported by organisations and local businesses, launched a clean-up initiative. The programme removes litter, restores public spaces and educates residents about conservation and climate action.
So, how did they do it?
Community mobilisation drives action: Volunteers work together to clean neglected areas, remove dumped waste and restore public spaces. This grassroots approach builds ownership and shared responsibility for the environment.
Targeted clean-up campaigns transform areas: Volunteers focus on polluted locations, removing waste and restoring natural beauty. These efforts improve the community's appearance and create safer, healthier spaces for residents.
Educational outreach raises awareness: The programme includes workshops, presentations and events to teach residents about climate change, sustainable practices and waste management. These activities empower people to make environmentally friendly choices.
Partnerships increase impact: Collaboration with local businesses, government agencies and organisations provides resources like funding, equipment, and expertise. These partnerships strengthen the initiative’s reach and sustainability.
Inspiring behavioural change ensures results: By involving residents in clean-ups and providing education, the programme encourages long-term changes. It promotes recycling, reducing waste, and responsible consumption habits.

Know your rights – how local government works
It’s important to understand how your local government works so that you can work with them to support what they are doing while your community continues to keep them accountable and deliver services on time. Remember you have a constitutional right to many of the services provided by local government, as well as to accountability and transparency, wherever you live and regardless of how much you earn. It is also where money collected from taxes and rates goes.
