Estcourt Golfers Raise Funds for Animal Protection

Residents in Estcourt brought people together to support a local animal shelter and raise important funds for the cause.
What is the problem?
The Estcourt Animal Shelter is a non-profit organisation that works to house, care for and rehome animals. The shelter needs funding to provide the many dogs and cats it looks after with vaccines and other healthcare, food and comfortable, safe shelter.
How are they solving it?
The Estcourt Animal Shelter shelter relies on donations and community support to keep caring for stray and abandoned animals. To help out, a group of local golfers organised a golf day to raise R20,000 for the shelter.
What made it work?
Community mobilisation: The golf day attracted 52 golfers who paid to participate and contribute to the fundraising effort. The event also engaged a wider network of sponsors and volunteers who provided support and resources.
A variety of fundraising activities: The event included auctions, raffles and player fines, to generate excitement and enthusiasm among the participants and to contribute to raising R9750. Tournament hosts, HMS Hardware and Builders Merchants, donated R10,250, bringing the total donation towards the Estcourt Animal Shelter to R20,000.
Enhanced community awareness: The golf day was an opportunity to raise awareness about the important work of the Estcourt Animal Shelter and the ongoing need for community support. This awareness helps to lead to more volunteers, donations, and adoptions of the animals.

Know your rights – how local government works
It’s important to understand how your local government works so that you can work with them to support what they are doing while your community continues to keep them accountable and deliver services on time. Remember you have a constitutional right to many of the services provided by local government, as well as to accountability and transparency, wherever you live and regardless of how much you earn. It is also where money collected from taxes and rates goes.
