The George subdistrict of the Garden Route is set to transform young lives with the launch of the Planet Youth programme. This initiative focuses on improving mental health and well-being.
What is the problem?
George faces challenges with youth substance abuse, violence, and school dropouts. These issues harm young people's mental health and future prospects. They also strain healthcare, education and the wider community.
How did they fix it?
The Planet Youth programme, coordinated by Health, Education, and Cultural Affairs and Sports departments, tackles these challenges. Based on Iceland’s prevention model, it strengthens protective factors, builds healthy communities and empowers young people.
So, how did they do it?
- Intersectoral collaboration: The programme brings together government departments, NGOs, businesses and community organisations. This approach combines diverse expertise and resources.
- Evidence-based strategies: The programme uses proven methods to prevent substance abuse and support youth development. Strategies are adapted to local needs using data from surveys and consultations.
- Community empowerment: The programme encourages communities to own solutions. Schools act as hubs for sports, cultural activities and development initiatives. These efforts create belonging among young people.
- Long-term investment: The programme focuses on sustainable outcomes for future generations. It builds local skills to maintain ongoing improvement cycles.
- Rigorous monitoring: Bi-annual surveys and reports measure the impact of interventions. This data guides further efforts to ensure effectiveness.
